Wiliam "Brian" Coats

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of William "Brian" Coats, aged 58, of Roscommon, MI. His family was by his side as he passed at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, MI.

Brian was born on March 5, 1967 in Lansing, MI to parents Larry and Eileen (Bishop) Coats. He accomplished many things in his lifetime that he was very proud of including his active duty in the U.S. Army where he was a combat veteran in Desert Storm/Desert Sheild. He also served as State Adjutant for the Department of Michigan VFW. This was his passion, to support veterans. Whenever he saw a veteran wearing a hat or other veteran marking, he would go out of his way to shake their hand, salute them, and thank them for their service.

Brian loved going camping with his family, taking rides in the side-by-side, enjoyed working on motorcycles with his dad, going on vacations and spending time with his girls and grandchildren. He also loved his "boys", Lucky and Beck. They took rides around Higgins Lake everyday. Lucky never left Brian's side.

Let’s not forget to mention that Brian was a die-hard Michigan State Fan, GO GREEN! Brian’s last working position was at Arauco, where he worked for the last 6 years. He was proud to be a member of their team.

Brian is survived by his wife, Kari Coats; children, Sierra (Matthew) James, Ruby Galloway, and Emma Galloway; grandchildren, Rosalyn and Waylon; father, Larry Coats; sister, Connie (Rich) Snover; and niece, niece Jessica Schrader. Brian is preceded in death by his mother, Eileen Coats.

Visitation will take place Saturday, July 12, 2025, 10:00 – 12:00 PM at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling, MI followed by a funeral service with Military Honors. A luncheon will follow services at VFW Post 4159, 219 Terrace Dr, Roscommon, MI 48653.
