Scott Patrick Foster

November 21, 1947 — April 29, 2025

Grayling

Scott Patrick Foster of Grayling, MI passed away on April 29th, 2025. Age 77, Scott was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2023.

Scott was born in Chelsea, MI to Dudley & Angeline Foster on November 21, 1947. After graduating from Chelsea High School in 1965, Scott earned a bachelor’s from Western Michigan & a master’s in education from University of Michigan (1974).

On April 19, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Christine M. Lindauer & they were married 50 years before she preceded him in death five years ago.

Scott started his teaching career in his hometown of Chelsea, MI, but was drafted by the US Army where he served in Germany. Upon returning to teaching, he taught 5 more years in Chelsea, then 12 years in Rawlins, WY followed by 17 years in Portage, WI before retirement in 2008. He then returned to his home state, purchasing his parent’s homestead from his siblings, and building at Breakfast Point on the Au Sable River in Grayling, MI.

Scott was raised Catholic but entertained doubts. He felt disappointed that he hadn’t openly professed his growing agnosticism & later atheism until after retirement as a HS English teacher for the public school system. He embraced Humanism in his later years. Scott loved books & was a lifetime reader. “So many books, so little time.” His dog, Freida, will dearly miss their daily walks at Hanson Hills. With retirement came lots of opportunity to travel to amazing places, but top of the list were the visits to see his grandkids in South Africa & Portugal. Ian & Avi were his heart. So it goes…

Scott is survived by his children, Nathan (Randi) Foster of Boulder, CO & Caroline (John) Foster of St. Paul, MN; grandchildren, Ian & Avi Foster; siblings, Diann (Tim) Murphy, Kathy (Bill) Barker, Pat (Chris) Foster, & Molly (Dean) Hackworth. Scott was preceded in death by his wife Tina Foster, parents Dudley & Angeline (Burg) Foster, & brothers Mickey (Ruth) Foster & Steve (Donna) Foster.

He will be missed by family, life-long friends, colleagues, and students from around the country. A Celebration of Life will take place on June 7th, 2025, 1:00pm at 3630 Breakfast Point Rd, Grayling, MI 49738.
