Melvin Robert Moore, age 83, of Grayling, MI passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Medilodge of Gaylord.
Melvin was born on July 17, 1942 in Dearborn, MI to Marvin "Bud" and Myrtle (Rydell) Moore. Melvin grew up in Higgins Lake, MI where he attended the local Lutheran church and became a Sunday school teacher at 16 years old and continued in that role for 45 years. He attended Roscommon High School and graduated with the class of 1960. He graduated from college in 1964 and started working as a tool and die maker.
He married his first wife Darla in 1965 in Higgins Lake. Together they had three sons, Todd, Timothy, and Jeffrey. His son Jeffrey sadly died at 9 years old. Melvin moved to Grayling in 1984. Melvin worked at River Valley and later at Airway Automation. He played for many years on the men's Grayling softball team. He was an instructor for HAM radio for 40 years. He was well known for 25 years of calling the canoe races for the ARCM. He also volunteered at the Commission on Aging for 20 years.
Melvin married "Abby" Gail LeClair on April 5, 2017. In his latter years of life he could be found playing euchre with his friends, shooting pool, and coloring with the girls at the Commission on Aging. Melvin was always known for his contagious smile. Living his life by the verse Ecclesiastes 4:12 "A cord of three strands is not easily broken".
Melvin is survived by his wife, Gail "Abby" Moore; sons, Todd Moore and Timothy Moore; and many grandchildren.
A Celebration of Melvin's Life will be celebrated at Grayling Baptist Church, 705 Madsen St, GHrayling, MI 49738 on November 8, 2025 at 11:00 am with a visitation beginning before at 10:00 am. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. It is requested that local COA friends and HAM radio members that can please attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Melvin can be made to COA Meal on Wheels.
