In Loving Memory of Kelly Mae-Azildia Verlinde
August 20, 1965 – April 26, 2025
Kelly Mae-Azildia Verlinde, age 59, of Frederic, Michigan, passed away at home on Saturday, April 26, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer—a battle she faced with unshakable grace, fierce determination, and her trademark sense of humor.
Born on August 20, 1965, in Grayling, Michigan, to Henry James “Jim” and Barbara F. (Clough) Verlinde, Kelly was the youngest of five children—a title she wore proudly throughout her life. Despite being the baby of the family, her strength defied birth order. She was the glue that held everyone together—always checking in, always showing up, always keeping everyone grounded. Protective by nature, she never hesitated to stand up for those she loved, especially her older sister Jean, and her heart was as big as her laugh.
Kelly had a way of lighting up every room she entered. Her fun-loving spirit was contagious, and her kindness radiated everywhere she went. She had a gift for making people feel seen and remembered—whether you were a family member, a neighbor, a library patron, or just someone passing by with a dog (who likely left with a treat). She loved the outdoors, found peace in her garden, and cherished quiet moments in nature. Animals were drawn to her gentle soul, and she found joy in the simplest pleasures—sunlight, laughter, good jokes, and the company of those she loved.
Following in the footsteps of her beloved mother, Kelly became a librarian at the Frederic Township Library, where she worked for nearly a decade. But she was so much more than a librarian—she was a storyteller, a cheerleader, a mentor, and a spark of inspiration for countless children in the community. Through her work, she nurtured a love of reading and created a space where imagination thrived. From craft days to reading programs, Kelly filled the library with life, laughter, and learning. She never just did a job—she made it a mission to make others feel welcome and valued.
Her impact extended far beyond her work. Kelly was a devoted daughter and sister, but her favorite role was being a mother to her two beautiful daughters, Barbie and Kristi. Their fun-filled relationship blossomed into a deep friendship as they, too, became mothers. She was also an incredible aunt and grandmother. Kelly never missed a chance to encourage her nieces, nephews, children, and grandchildren in whatever they pursued. She made each one feel like they were her favorite—and somehow, she meant it every time. Her love was abundant, and her presence unwavering.
Even in the face of illness, Kelly never lost her spirit. She met each day with courage and positivity, choosing joy even when her body made it difficult. She refused to give up, and her strength inspired everyone around her.
She recently celebrated 25 beautiful years with her partner, Vance, at Tinker’s Junction—an occasion that meant the world to her. Their bond was one of deep affection and steady love, and Vance’s care and devotion during Kelly’s final days was a testament to the life they built together.
Kelly leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and joy. She is survived by the love of her life, Vance Jacklyn; her daughters, Barbie (Jason) Hoesli and Kristi Warren (Rob Press); stepson, Jamie Jacklyn; siblings, Craig (Sonja) Verlinde, Jean (George) Rosin, and Anita Verlinde (Gary Piper); six grandchildren, Erica Hoesli, Samantha Hoesli, Max Hoesli, Josh Warren, Katelyn Warren, and Bryson Jacklyn; great-grandson, Jackson McMillan; aunt Jeanette Kitchen and uncle Kerrigan (Nancy) Clough; many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, countless friends, and a community forever grateful for her generous heart and bright spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Barbara Verlinde; brothers, Stevan and Daniel Verlinde; son-in-law, Gregory Warren; and great-nephew Henry Stevan.
To know Kelly was to love her. She was laughter and light, wit and warmth, strength and sweetness—all rolled into one unforgettable soul. She will be missed beyond words, but her memory will continue to bloom in the gardens she loved, the books she shared, and the many lives she touched so deeply.
A graveside service and burial will take place on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Frederic, Michigan.
