John Howard Sloan

John H. Sloan III, DO died on June 28, 2008 at his home in Grayling, MI after a 9-month long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Columbus OH on January 12, 1937 to John H. Sloan, Jr. and his wife Elva (nee Schoonover). John graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in zoology in 1959 and obtained his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (now Midwestern University) in 1963. John then spent the next nine years becoming boarded, first in general surgery, then in cardiovascular-thoracic surgery. He practiced in Detroit, Michigan from 1969 to 1978; he then started a practice in Chicago, IL. John practiced in Chicago until 1999, at which time health forced him to retire. He and is wife, Nancy, retired to Grayling, MI in 2001. During his years of practice, Dr. Sloan also taught medical students, first at Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine, then at Midwestern University. John also spent time on clinical research as well as research into new ways of incorporating computer and telemedicine into both student education and clinical practice. John is survived by his wife, Nancy (nee Fodor), his beloved orange tabby, Jordan, and his three children-John H. Sloan IV, Ph.D. of Loveland, CO; Joseph F. Sloan and his fiancee Elizabeth McKnight, of Chicago, IL; and Tamara Sloan, DVM, and her husband Patrick Price, of Farmington Hills, MI. There will be a private family Celebration of Life.
