John "Marty" Martin Phillips

April 6, 1949 — March 30, 2020

John Martin “Marty” Phillips of Flint, Age 70, died March 30, 2020 in northern Michigan. Memorial Service will be announced at a later date, Pastor Mark Macormick officiating. Private burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Marty was born in Flint on April 6, 1949 to William (Bill) Phillips and Elizabeth (Bette) Jardine. He was the middle of three children. Marty lived a very full life, volunteering with United Way to construct wheelchair ramps, serving as the assistant athletic director and joining his wife in teaching (math & computer science) at Grand Blanc Schools, after retiring as a Lieutenant from the Flint Police Department.

On July 19, 1969, he married Linda Phillips and together they had a wonderful life. They had two children, Leslie Marquez and J.J. Phillips. Marty and Linda also had a huge impact in raising nieces Becky and Wendy.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church as well as the Congregational United Church of Christ in Lewiston. He loved to travel the country, and treasured every moment with his grandchildren, Micah, Levi, Luke, Jamison, Maddox, and Laci, above all else.

Marty is survived by his daughter Leslie (Craig), son J.J. (Shauna). He also leaves behind his siblings, Becky (Dick) and Sherry (Charlie), as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. And his dog Buster. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda, father Bill, mother Bette, father-in-law Bill Gillie, and mother-in-law Janet.
