John Michael Jones

October 18, 1946 — September 26, 2025

Grayling

John Jones, a beloved father, community leader, and veteran, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 18, 1946, in Belleview, Michigan, to Gertrude “Mickey”

Hendrick and John S. Jones, he lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and community.

John graduated from Holy Redeemer in 1964 and attended the University of Michigan, Flint, before being drafted into the Vietnam War in 1967. After completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, he served three years in London, stationed at Ruislip. As a supervisor of communications, he held top-secret NATO clearance, relaying crucial messages between battle areas and the United States, including directly to the President. He then served one year in Vietnam, stationed at Tan Son Nhut.

While stationed in Ruislip, John met his first wife, Florence Pelekai. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Michele, born in England, and later their son, John, born in the United States.

Upon returning to Michigan, John initially worked with his father at the family bowling alleys. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to start a power washing company with high school friends, and in the early 1970s, he opened Pro One All Sports in Flint.

John met his beloved second wife, Cindy, they married and expanded their family with two sons, Chris and Jeremy. Cindy was a physical education teacher in the Grayling School district.

Encouraged by a friend, John transitioned into car sales at Al Bennett Ford in Flint, where he worked until 1985. His dedication and skill were recognized when Al Bennett offered him the General Manager position at their Grayling location. The family moved to Grayling, a community John found friendly and welcoming, and he "never looked back." He managed the store until its closure, later opening his own car lot, JJs Motor Mall. John retired in 2017, leaving a legacy of hard work and commitment.

John was deeply involved in his community, serving with the Rotary for 27 years and holding the position of president multiple times. He was a familiar and beloved voice at many local events, earning him the affectionate title, "The voice of Crawford County." His contributions included:

  • MC for the Pictionary Olympics

  • MC for the United Way Auction

  • MC for the Minstrel Show

  • Announcer for the Canoe Marathon Parade

  • Bringing the Clydesdale horses to the community

He also cherished the "Snake Cup Challenge" tradition with his boys. In recognition of his unwavering commitment and impact, John was honored as the Grayling Citizen of the Year.

John is survived by his brother, Michael Jones, children Michele (Jim) Papatheodore, John (Beth) Jones, Chris Jones, and Jeremy (Kari) Jones along with his beloved grandchildren: Kalei, Abby, Trey, Keilana, Athan, Malia, Sienna and Sawyer. The community will deeply miss his vibrant presence and generous spirit. He will be remembered for his unwavering patriotism, his dedication to his family, and his invaluable contributions to his community.
