Helen Marie Nielson

Helen Marie (Balch) Nielson passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, June 13th, 2025, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan, surrounded by the love and presence of her family as she took her final breath — all while watching the Game Show Network, her favorite station and a source of joy and comfort in her daily life.

Helen was born on December 15th, 1940, at Grayling Mercy Hospital in Grayling, Michigan, to Lawrence William Balch and Margaret Mae (LaMotte) Balch. A devoted Catholic, Helen lived her life guided by faith, compassion, and unwavering love for her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bruce Joseph Nielson; her eldest son, Lawrence William “Billy” Nielson; and her brother, Lawrence William Balch. Though she experienced deep loss, Helen remained a steady and loving presence for everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her sons, David (Rhonda) Nielson and Terrence (Brenda) Nielson; she is also survived by two stepsons, Mike (Debbie) Nielson and Tim (Renee) Nielson and their families; her six granddaughters: Majerle (William) Germain, Madison (David) Horton, Taylor Nielson, Brittany (Dylan) Wyman, Macy Nielson, and Vanessa Nielson; and her two great-grandchildren, Colbi Germain and Myles Wyman. The family is joyfully awaiting the arrival of two more great-grandchildren in the near future — blessings Helen was excited to welcome. She is also survived by her loving brother, Ernie Balch.

Helen’s legacy is one of deep faith, quiet strength, and enduring love. She was the heart of her family — a source of prayer, laughter, and comfort who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially a good game show and time with loved ones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 17th, 2025 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Grayling, Michigan with Father Jerry Hunko officiating. Viewing and visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling, Michigan.
