George Eric McEvers

July 11, 1936 — October 20, 2021

George Eric McEvers, Age 85 of Grayling died at home after a short time in the Heartland Hospice program. He went to Heaven on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. He was greeted in Heaven by his father and mother, Harry and Josie McEvers, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Henry and Virginia Luks, his son Scott and brothers Mike and Derek McEvers, and many other welcoming friends and family members. Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Rita, his children Denae (Gary) Fox, RaeAnn Collins, and Jennifer (Jim) Calvin; six grandchildren who made him smile, Emily Henson, Wesley Fox, Jolene and Molly Collins, Josie and Jimmy Calvin; six great grandchildren; sister, Patti (Fred) McConkey; many special loved nieces and nephews. George was born in Grayling and worked at his Dad’s and Dad’s partner’s mill, McVal Lumber Co. He went in the Army after high school. After the service he returned to work at the mill and Stephan Wood. He left the Mills to work at the U.S. Post Office . He started delivering mail as a foot mailman. He then worked as a rural mail carrier until his retirement. Many wonderful vacations were spent at the cabin on Trout Lake in Ontario, Canada off the Algoma Railroad. George loved hours of fishing and hiking to nearby lakes. He enjoyed hunting trips to Nebraska with friends. George and Rita also went to Gulf Shores , Alabama for over 20 years where they spent three to four months in the winter meeting up with friends from Grayling. George coached Little League baseball with his brother Derek and he was very active in the Grayling Booster Club which focused on projects for young people. George will always be in our hearts and will be remembered as someone who would give you the shirt off his back and he helped his friends over the years. He truly enjoyed his friends and family. A Memorial Service will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery with Military Honors on Thurs. October 28th. at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, consider a Memorial Donation to Heartland Hospice, 417 W.
