Donald Larry Kernstock, age 79, of Grayling, MI went to heaven to be with the Lord on July 22, 2025. Don passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on April 1, 1946 in Bay City, MI to Alfred and Arlene (Goulette) Kernstock. On June 22, 1968, he married the love of his life, Linda Gildner, and together they raised two sons.
Don started his career as a tool & die maker in Bay City and also took on the unique task of climbing towers to change lights high above ground. After relocating to the Grayling area, he spent the remainder of his career as a licensed builder, focusing on residential building and remodeling, working on many homes in Crawford County and the surrounding areas.
A devoted member of the Grayling Free Methodist Church, he took great pleasure in attending the Men's Bible Study Group. Don's faith in the Lord guided his life and actions. His commitment to service and fellowship within the church community was a reflection of his deep spiritual foundation. He found great joy and peace in God's creation, spending time outdoors, ice fishing, harvesting mule deer, antelope, and a Michigan elk, and, in his younger years, pheasant hunting.
Don was an involved father with a passion for any sport his sons were involved in, with a special love for the sport of wrestling. He took pride in supporting Brian and Brent, never missing an opportunity to be present on the sidelines as their biggest fan. He was a lifelong supporter of Michigan sports teams, especially the Tigers, Lions, and Wolverines. Don also exemplified dedication through his strong work ethic and his deep appreciation for craftsmanship and hands-on work. His warm spirit, tireless hands, and unwavering love for his family will be missed, but his loved ones find comfort in knowing he now rests in the arms of God.
Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda; sons, Brian Kernstock and Brent Kernstock; siblings, Gary Kernstock, Leah (Ken) McNulty, Tim (Brenda) Kernstock, and Cindy Phillips; sisters-in-law, Betty Warren and Debbie Kernstock; and brothers-in-law, Carl Gildner and Paul (Sherry) Gildner; and Aunt Arlene. Don is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, John Kernstock, Robert Morris, and Aaron Kernstock. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grayling Free Methodist Church on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. A luncheon will follow the memorial service at the church. Don will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling, MI.
