David "SKIP" Hanson

April 5, 1933 — May 26, 2019

Colonel David "Skip" Hanson, 86, loving husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on May 26th. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sherry; six children Mark (Candice), Scott (Patty), Curt (Pati), Karen (Linda), and Rob Dillenbeck (Emmy), Rick Dillenbeck (Dawn); 10 grandchildren Heather (Adam Marrow), Amy (Joel Wright) Hanson, Craig Hanson, Chelsea (Ethan Studer), Tyler Hanson (Erin), Bradley Dillenbeck, Amanda Dillenbeck, Charlotte Dillenbeck, Carson Dillenbeck, Carter Dillenbeck, and six great grandchildren. Also surviving him are his brothers Al Hanson of Buchannan, and Carl Dean Hanson of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Francelia (Tete), sister Jeanne Thompson (Sandy), grandson Eric, and granddaughter Trista. A life-long resident of Grayling, Skip was an avid sportsman and community supporter. After serving in the Korean War, Skip served a full military career in the Michigan National Guard, raising through the ranks in various positions at Camp Graying, the Grayling Army Airfield, and the Michigan National Guard State Headquarters in Lansing. His final military assignment was Commander of Camp Grayling, the very place where he had held his first jobs during high school as a temporary summer employee. As a testament to his enduring contributions, upon retirement, hundreds of attendees from around the country gathered to honor Skip for his national and local service. Also serving his hometown community, Skip was an active member of the Rotary, served on the Grayling City Council, and held various positions, including President, on the Grayling Chamber of Commerce. He was an active contributor to the founding efforts that started the Grayling Little League. His contributions to the conduct of the highly regarded annual "Grayling Night" successfully brought the regional and local military and civilian communities together for well over a decade. Skip was continous member of Grayling's American Legion Post 106 for almost 30 years. Celebration of Skip's life will be held at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, 905 I-75 Business Loop, Graying, Michigan 49738, Saturday, June 1, 2019, 12-1 pm Visitation, 1 pm Church service, followed by a luncheon. Internment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, consider making donations in memory of Skip to the Grayling Little League, P.O. Box 130, Grayling, MI 49738.
