Mr. Charles Jackson, 83, of Lovells Township passed away on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008. Charles was born in Fairmont, Illinois on February 9, 1924, the son of the late Louis F. and Gladys (Phillips) Jackson. He served in the US Navy, Pacific Ocean Theater of Operations in WW II. He married the former Rita Post on Sept. 14, 1947 in Marshall, Indiana. Charles retired from Michigan State University in 1990. Charles was the Assistant Dean Emeritus, College of Education Michigan State University. Charles accomplishments in his education career included: Fulbright Exchange Teacher Truro, Cornwall, UK; Appointed Director of Student Teaching Center, Oakland County, by MSU; Taught for MSU at Overseas School of Rome in Rome, Italy; Hague International School and the International School of Amsterdam, Netherlands; International School of Brussels in Brussels, Belgium; Cairo American College in Cairo, Egypt. 1984-90 Appointed Director, External Credit Courses/Programs, Lifelong Education Services, MSU 1985-1990 Appointed Assistant Dean, Off Campus Services and Programs, College of Education, MSU 1998 Recipient of Crystal Apple Award, 1999-2000 Appointed to State Board of Education as member of Professional Standards Commission Charles and his wife Rita moved to Lovells area after retiring in 1990. In 1990, Charles was appointed to COOR ISD for a 2 year term, elected by voters for 2 more six year terms, served as President of COOR ISD Board of Education 1993-1999. Volunteered in Crawford AuSable School District 1990-2000, was active in various levels and activities of the Michigan State Board of Education. Charles was a 50 year gold member Masonic Lodge, State of Indiana Grand Lodge Charles was active in the community: President for 2 years of Lovells Township Historical Association, Friends of the Crawford County Library, North Branch River Association, Survived by: Wife: Rita Jackson of Lovells Township Son: Eric (Alison) Jackson of Pennsylvania Daughter: Lynne Marie (Harold) Smith of New York Grandchildren: Christopher Louis Jackson & Danielle Ann Jackson Preceded in death by a son, Laurence Louis Jackson. Memorial service will be held at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home on Saturday February 2,2008 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Mercy Hospital Critical Care Unit, 1100 Michigan Ave. Grayling, Michigan 49738.
