Charles Michael Draper

March 26, 1949 — December 21, 2021

Charles Michael Draper, 72, of Lewiston, MI passed away Tuesday, December 21st 2021 at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital.

Charles was born to Charles W. and Frances (Bradshaw) Draper in Hillsdale, MI on March 26th, 1949. He held many jobs in his lifetime but the most prominent were his careers as school teacher, Fire Chief, and EMT-Specialist at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee, MI. He served for 26 years on the Maple Grove Twp. Fire Department in Kaleva, MI; many of those years as chief. He was a true public servant, and jack of all trades. He drove the street sweeper, dug graves, did curb and street work, and even drove Santa into town on the firetruck for Christmas.

Charles served as Lieutenant in the US Navy. He navigated C130 airplanes. He flew missions to the north and south poles, including trips to Antarctica where he flew scientists, supplies, and materials for work there in the early 70's.

He enjoyed the life he built with his wife Julie. They worked together to create cages and art work for the Roscommon Zoo. He really enjoyed woodworking, and cross-stitching. He was always doing a little list of ideas around his home that his wife Julie would come up with.

He was the kindest man you ever met. He never met a stranger, and he had a wonderful sense of humor. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved animals, and he loved his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by many.

Charles is survived by his mother Frances Weaver; sister Lonnie (Dean) McDuff, daughter Patricia (Jason) Mathews; son Edward (Amanda) Draper; grandchildren Tyler Krause, Myah Regula, Emily Draper, Landen Truax, and Harper Draper; step-children Douglas Trimner, Justin Trimner, and Caleb Trimner. He is preceded in death by his wife Julie Draper, father Charles Warren Draper, and step-father William Weaver.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be planned for a later date. Condolences can be shared with his family at www.sorensonlockwood.com.

Arrangements entrusted to Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home.
