Bernard John Fowler

Bernard John Fowler, 92, of Grayling, passed away on February 2, 2018. He was born in Roscommon County, Michigan on December 8, 1925 to the late William John and Ella (Durfee) Fowler. He graduated from Kenton High School in Kenton, Ohio. Bernard served in the US Marines in WWII. He enjoyed driving school bus, owning a trucking service, and also became a pilot. Bernard was intricately involved with the Grayling Airport in management and was on the Airport Advisory Committee. He married the former Patricia Stephan on June 28, 1952 at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayling. They became caretakers at Green Timbers Resort in Vanderbilt, Michigan. Bernard then worked as the construction foreman at McLouth Steel. His next success was to own and operate Edgewater of the AuSable Resort until 1989. He was a fishing guide at the resort and enjoyed all the tasks associated with running the resort. Bernard served as the Grayling Township Supervisor, as well as, being the president of the Crawford County Board of Supervisors. He also served on the Michigan Townships Association Board of Directors and eventually became the president. He was passionate about the AuSable River Canoe Marathon and was the Canoe Marathon Champion from 1953 to 1955. He was a member of the Community of Christ in Grayling and the American Legion Post 106. Bernard is survived by his wife, Patricia of 65 years. Children: Jeffrey (Linda) Fowler of Midland, Gail (Rodney, Jr.) Ney of Grayling, and Stuart (Cindy)Fowler of Gaylord. Grandchildren: Jesica (Ben) McPherson, William Fowler, Nichole (David) Libercajt, Tressa (James) Duryea, Rodney Ney III, John Fowler, and Trisha Fowler. There are 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, and 3 sisters; Naomi Nolan, Leona French, and Jeanne Feldhauser.
