Florence Ardis Hough

Florence Ardis Hough, 74, of Grayling, Michigan, passed away on November 10, 2017, at her home, with her family around her. She was and is a beloved friend, life partner, mother, grandmother, aunt, and teacher, who believed that teaching was a sacred calling. She loved to create art, to work and play in her gardens, spend time with friends, and travel the country with her husband, James. Florence was born on September 8, 1943, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Her parents were Leighton F. Schwalm (deceased 1944) and Margaret Stewart (deceased 1995), and Asa J. Stewart (deceased 1980). She was the youngest of three children: she had a brother, David (Jean) Schwalm, and a sister, Mary DeCook (deceased 2016). Florence graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1961, and graduated from Alma College from 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art Secondary Education. She taught in Parma-Western Schools from 1965-1967, and Clintondale Schools from 1967-1970. She married William L. Nolan (deceased 1972) in 1969. After moving to Grayling, she married Dr. James A. Hough in 1974. Florence taught third grade in Crawford AuSable Schools from 1988-2003. She was a member of Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church, Beyond the Garden Wall Garden Club, the Crawford County Historical Society, AuSable Artisan Village, and MARSP (Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel). Florence is survived by James; her three children- Dr. Amy Lynn Nolan (Robert Knox) of Waterloo, Iowa; Timothy William Nolan (Jennifer) of Okemos, Michigan; and Ronald James Hough (Carolyn Sutton) of Ypsilanti, Michigan- and two grandchildren, Leighton William Nolan and Isla Elizabeth Nolan. For everyone who was blessed enough to know and love her, Florence radiated grace, gentleness, wisdom, and strength. She will always be deeply missed and deeply loved. Donations may be sent to Christian Help Center of Grayling, Special Olympics, Munson Hospice, and UMCOR.
